Satoru Nihei is a graphic designer, a recent graduate of the 2D Design Department at Cranbrook Academy of Art. He is the owner of Beautifool, a design studio where playful exploration seeks and creates meaning dialogue within our diverse culture.

Recently, Satoru’s work and interview were published in a book, Font Family: Get Familiar with Fonts!, along with two internationally acclaimed designers, Stefan Sagmeister and Rick Valicenti. His work was also included in Graphic Design: The New Basics authored by Ellen Lupton and Jennifer Cole Phillips. In 2009, Satoru was a nominated candidate for the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Awards for Excellence in Communication Design. His work has also appeared in AIGA 50 Books/50 Covers of 2003, Metropolis Magazine, Tokyo TDC Design Annual and among others.

Satoru has been an organizer and curator of The Playground, presented by Rick Valicenti. He has also been an active participant of DesignInquiry, a non-profit educational organization devoted to researching design issues in intensive team-based gatherings. Satoru was once hired by Gento Matsumoto, a significant and influential graphic designer, the art director and the founder of Saru Brunei Co., Ltd., in Tokyo. He received an associate degree in painting from the Musashino Art University in Tokyo and holds a BFA in graphic design with honors from the Maine College of Art.
